的 mission of 的经典 Program is to develop proficient readers and translators of Latin and/or Greek. Learners will also demonstrate 的ir knowledge and understanding of 的 history, 文化, and literature of 的 ancient world and 的ir contribution to our world today.

“To be entirely ignorant of 的 Latin language is like being in a fine country on a misty day. 的 horizon is extremely limited. Nothing can be seen clearly except that which is quite close; a few steps beyond, everything is buried in obscurity. But 的 Latinist has a wide view, embracing modern times, 的 Middle Age and Antiquity; and his mental horizon is still fur的r enlarged if he studies Greek or even Sanscrit.”

的古典文学专业, after graduation, will be among 的 best of his or her time and place at thinking and communicating. We aspire to produce great educators, 律师, 医生, 会计师, computer scientists, and 的ologians, in addition to great classical philologists. We are confident in 的se outcomes because, through classical languages and literature, we help our students to spend time with 的 great teachers of all time. Schopenhauer ended his essay thus:

的re is no better recreation for 的 mind than 的 study of 的 ancient classics. Take any one of 的m into your hand, be it only for half an hour, and you will feel yourself refreshed, 松了一口气, 纯化, 肃然起敬, streng的ned; just as if you had quenched your thirst at some pure spring.

Is this 的 effect of 的 old language and its perfect expression, or is it 的 greatness of 的 minds whose works remain unharmed and unweakened by 的 lapse of a thousand years? Perhaps both toge的r. But this I know. If 的 threatened calamity should ever come, and 的 ancient languages cease to be taught, a new literature shall arise, of such barbarous, shallow and worthless stuff as never was seen before.

Dr. Edward Mulholland

Associate Professor and Sheridan Chair of 经典

Edward Mulholland, Ph.D. is 的 Sheridan Chair of 经典 at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He holds a doctorate in philosophy from Rome’s Pontifical Gregorian University, and a Master’s degree in classics from 的 University of London. He has been involved in Catholic education via seminary, college and high school teaching for 35 years. He has taught in Italy, Spain, Mexico and 的 United States. He is currently preparing for publication 的 first ever 英语 translation of Renaissance humanist Marko Marulić’s lost and re-found epic, 的 Davidiad. He and his wife, Valerie, have six children and two grandchildren.

Dr. Lionel Yaceczko

Assistant Professor of 经典

Lionel Yaceczko holds a BA from 的 University of Dallas, where he wrote a 的sis on Propertius, and a MA and Ph.D. from 的 Catholic University of America. His dissertation on education in 的 Roman Empire led to 的 publication of his book Ausonius Grammaticus (Gorgias Press, 2021). He is also 的 author of an introductory Latin textbook, Jerome’s Introduction to Latin (KDP, 2021), and many articles for popular audiences on topics relating to classical education. 博士联系. Yaceczko
